MANISTEE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A veterans advocacy group is making another push to get a VA Clinic closed to home.

The group, Community Based Outpatient Clinic, is urging the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs to open an outpatient clinic in Manistee.

On Saturday, the group will meet with Congressman Jack Bergman in Onekama to discuss what can be done.

Last spring they started a petition and have nearly 2,000 signatures.

The clinic would serve veterans in Benzie, Manistee, Mason and Lake Counties.

“When we begin to look at how far veterans have to drive to receive services we found that really at minimum they are looking around 100 miles round trip some of them 140 miles to get to a clinic and yes we do know there is a new clinic coming to traverse city and we’re excited about that but a clinic here in Manistee will still serve a tremendous amount of our veterans," said Veterans Advocate Jennifer Smeltzer.

The group hopes to get up to 6,000 signatures.

They plan to present those and other information to lawmakers.
