GT County home destroyed in fire

A home in Green Lake Township was destroyed in a fire Monday night.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A late night fire destroyed a home in Grand Traverse County.

Crews from the Green Lake Township Fire Department responded to a call around 10:22 p.m. Monday to 7712 North Shore Court.

The fire department was on scene battling the fire for four hours.

Officials said the home was being renovated so no one was in the house when the fire started.

According to crews, it was difficult to shut off the gas because the meter had burned up and the shutoff was gone.

Consumers Energy was called to the scene to dig up the line and pinch off the gas.

Crews also said the cold temperatures made the fire difficult to fight because lines were freezing.

The next door neighbors home had to be protected against the blaze.

Water suppression was used to keep heat and embers away from the other home.

Five departments helped with the fire.

The state fire marshal is expected to be on the scene Tuesday to figure out the origin of the fire.
