Kayak trip takes tragic turn on Lake Michigan

An extensive search resulted in the body of a missing kayaker being found late Tuesday afternoon in Lake Michigan.

One person is dead after his kayak capsized on Lake Michigan.

Crews were called to the scene at N. Omigisi Beach Road north of Leland around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. One kayaker, 81-year-old Dale M. Hathaway, of Northville, had been able to swim to shore, but his companion, Robert Womac, was still in the water.

After a search, Womac was found in 11 feet of water about 100 yards off shore.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich says Hathaway was wearing a life preserver, but Womac was not.

Sheriff Borkovich says this is the second water-related death in the Leelanau County waters of Lake Michigan in the month of July.
