Kids Christmas shop with northern Michigan heroes

Elementary kids help northern Michigan heroes shop for Toys for Tots.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Elementary students took charge Friday morning and schooled some northern Michigan heroes on the perfect Christmas toys.

The students at the "Shop with a Hero" event were on a mission to find the perfect gifts to donate to the Toys for Tots campaign.

Students from Westwoods and Silver Lake Elementary schools in Traverse City teamed up with police officers, firefighters and active duty military at Meijer on US 31.

John Spaulding, Traverse City Meijer store director, said it's a great event for the community.

"It brings all the heroes together whether you're a police officer, coast guardsman, fireman and blends that with the kids," Spaulding said. "So, it really brings the community totally together for a fantastic cause."\

The "Shop with a Hero" event has been going on for more than 12 years at the Meijer in Traverse City.
