Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail in running for best wine region
LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- USA Today asked a panel of experts to pick their favorite american wine regions, and the Leelanau Peninsula Wine trail made the list!
It's one of 20 nominations, and it's up to you to make it win number one for 'Best Wine Region' in America.
The Leelanau Peninsula is home to 26 wineries with 680 acres of wine grapes. The cool climate produces wines that are often crisp, clean and balanced, as well as ice wine.
Executive Director Lorrie Hathaway says the Leelanau Wine Trail stands out not only because of its great views, but because of the local wine tasting experience.
Very often when you go into our tasting rooms it's actually the owner and the winemaker who's pouring the wine behind the tasting bar. So, it's the person who actually harvested the grapes, made the wine and bottled it, and is now pouring it into your glass.
When the contest was first posted back in July, Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail was number one. Just recently it fell to number three after Finger Lakes in New York and Lodi in California.
