Local Red Cross executive director headed to South Carolina

Cathy Anthofer-Fialon, Northern Michigan Red Cross' executive director, is headed to Columbia, South Carolina to help area executive directors as they deal with Hurricane Florence

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Earlier this week, the Northern Michigan office of the American Red Cross sent a volunteer from the Upper Peninsula to aide those battling Hurricane Florence, and now its own executive director is packing her bags and heading to the Atlantic coast.

Cathy Anthofer-Fialon says the Red Cross sent out a call Thursday afternoon to Michigan executive directors who could head south.

Anthofer-Fialon says the decision to answer that call was an easy one.

She says she's been in disaster recovery situations in Haiti and Florida, but doesn't know what this weekend's storm(s) will have in store.

"I'm not sure exactly what to expect because every storm is different," she said. "I do know to go in not having expectations, knowing that Red Cross has provided me with excellent training, and I'm going to be asked to use that training. It's amazing to be a part of an organization where it doesn't matter who you are, we're there to help."

Anthofer-Fialon says she'll be heading to Columbia, South Carolina to assist local executive directors who'll have their plates full.

Northern Michigan Red Cross is still taking on volunteers who'd like to help in the recovery efforts.

New volunteers can sign up here, and donations to the American Red Cross can be made here.
