Long-time educator, mayor in Cheboygan passes away
CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Long-time teacher and five-term mayor of Cheboygan, Ellis Olson, has passed away at the age of 79.
Olson received his Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University before teaching elementary school at Cheboygan Public Schools. Olson also received a Lifetime Teaching Certificate.
For 16 years Ellis Olson served on the Cheboygan City Council while serving five-terms as the Cheboygan City Mayor. During his time as mayor, Olson was involved in the reconstruction of the Cheboygan City Hall-Opera House and the complete restoration of the city water system.
Olson also helped with many things that bettered the city, which includes the repaving of every asphalt road, the installation of a new street lighting system , the rebuilding of the recreation department and the addition of five new city parks.
In 2016, Olson was awarded the State Historical Lifetime Achievement award. Recently, the City of Cheboygan honored Olson by proclaiming November 4 "Ellis Olson Day."
Visitation for Olson will be held from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM Friday, December 8 at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 PM.
Olson is survived by his wife, Sandra, five daughters, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
