Mackinac Bridge temporarily closed due to high winds

Overturned camper on the Mackinac Bridge

UPDATE: The Mackinac Bridge has reopened. The Mackinac Bridge was closed temporarily on Sunday due to high winds.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority was reporting that they were experiencing winds of sufficient force in the Straits area to close the Mackinac Bridge to all vehicles.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority says the winds were blowing across the bridge surface of up to 65 miles per hour.

Motorists were instructed to slow down to 20 miles per hour as they approached the bridge and to be prepared to stop. Bridge personnel were at both ends of the structure to provide instructions.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority was monitoring wind conditions throughout the structure of the bridge. Wind conditions improved and the bridge was reopened.

If you are planning to travel to the Straits area, please tune to AM radio 530 or 1610 for updates.

There were reports of campers and trailers that were overturned. The Mackinac Bridge Authority confirms that everyone made it out safely and the bridge has been cleared.
