MASON COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — A major Mason County company is shutting down.

The Harsco Rail plant will close its Ludington - Pere Marquette location.

The end of production at the end of this quarter will impact more than 130 employees.

Representatives with the company say they will be consolidating production to its plant in Columbia, South Carolina.

They say some employees will be transferred to that location; other’s will need to speak with their union and evaluate their options.

There will however, still be around 30 jobs kept at the current location.

In a brief statement, Paul Keson, the Pere Marquette Township Supervisor tells 7&4 News:

We were very surprised and disappointed that they will be closing their Ludington facility. Harsco has been a large part of the community for many years; they’re providing good jobs to a lot of families in the area. Their departure will be a devastating blow to our community and to the many dedicated employees who will lose their jobs as a result.
