Man arrested after nearly six hour standoff


EMMET COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A man has been arrested after police surrounded the Traverse Woods Apartments on Lafayette Avenue in Petoskey for nearly six hours Friday night.

Police arrived on scene at around 6:00 p.m. and stayed until an arrest was made at around 12:00 a.m. early Saturday morning.

Police say an officer was on scene for an unrelated matter, when he had an altercation with the suspect around 4:30 Friday afternoon.

According to police, the man locked himself inside his apartment and would not come out.

A tactical response team was called to negotiate with the man.

Around 12:00 a.m. Saturday morning, police say the man went outside trying to flee the area, and was arrested.

The suspect was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

"The gentleman was taken into custody," said Lt. Adrian Karr of the Petoskey Department of Public Safety. "Sometimes these things take a long time to get to a peaceful resolve and we're just thankful that nobody was injured."

Police would not say what charges the man is facing.

Neighbors tell us the suspect who was inside may have a mental disorder.

A tactical team was on scene, along with the Petoskey Department of Public Safety, tribal police and the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office.
