Man sentenced in 2016 murder of girlfriend's father

CLARE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A man accused of killing his girlfriend's father and burying him in the backyard has been sentenced.

On Friday, James Kuhns was sentenced to life in prison for the 2016 killing of Leonard Hempel.

According to investigators, Kuhns and Hempel were involved in a domestic assault in April of 2016.

Hempel's body was found on May 1.

Kuhns pleaded guilty to open murder in June 2018.

Angela Hempel, the victim's daughter and Kuhn's girlfriend, was originally charged with open murder in connection with the case but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of lying to a peace officer, concealing a death of an individual and accessory to a felony after the fact.

Hempel was sentenced to one year in jail and five years of probation in September 2016.
