MSP K-9 awarded first ever Blue Heart Medal

Bolt and Trooper David Cardenas were honored Thursday.

MONTCALM COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Michigan State Police Trooper and his canine partner were awarded the first Canine Blue Heart Medal Thursday.

Trooper David Cardenas and his canine Bolt were called to Montcalm County one day in August to track down two suspects in a drive-by shooting.

When one of the men fled on foot, Bolt caught up with the suspect and Cardenas said he heard a loud yelp and saw the man hit Bolt.

Bolt continued to track the man and was able to trip him, allowing Cardenas to catch up with the suspect and arrest him.

After finding blood and a knife on the ground Cardenas realized Bolt had been stabbed in the neck.

Bolt had two surgeries but made a full recovery and is back in action with Cardenas.

The two were honored in a ceremony on Thursday in Lansing.
