GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Benzonia woman was charged after an investigation into fraudulent checks.

Troopers were asked to investigate after a Traverse City area financial institution discovered the cashing of several potentially fraudulent checks after a woman made off with over $4,000 in ill-gotten funds.

During the investigation, troopers discovered that the woman had reportedly cashed the fraudulent checks between March 12, 2018 and May 7, 2018 at banks in both Grand Traverse and Manistee counties.

Michigan State Police said the account owner was contacted and verified the checks were cashed without their permission.

Upon completion of the investigation, the case was handed over to the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor's Office.

The prosecutor issued a felony warrant of forgery for Cristina Mancuso, 28.

Mancuso was arrested and formally charged.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Post in Cadillac at 231-779-6040.
