GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Munson Medical Center is getting closer to breaking ground on their biggest expansion ever.
It will include a new surgery addition and a Family Birth and Children Center.
The new center will have a nearly 16,000 square foot neonatal intensive care unit and an updated maternity unit due to their current facility being outdated and too small to meet today's needs.
It will also have a pediatrics unit to support their family centered approach, which will help them provide intensive care similar to what is provided at a children's hospital.
"So we need to be a resource for the families of all of northern Michigan and to be that resource that expanded resource for northern Michigan we need to expand or facilities as well," said Munson Healthcare Chief Development Officer Desiree Worthington.
Right now, the hospital is working on raising the final $3 million of their $36 million goal.
The surgery addition groundbreaking is slated for this summer.
The groundbreaking for the Family Birth and Children Center will be 2020 at the earliest.
