New ice rink installed downtown Elk Rapids

ELK RAPIDS, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Folks in Antrim County have a new way to get active outside this winter.

A new skating rink has been installed at Veteran’s Park near downtown Elk Rapids.

Village officials say they've had rinks in the past, but wanted something more permanent.

This year they bought this liner so even if it happens to thaw, it can refreeze without losing the rink.

It cost about $5,000, but several community donations made it possible.

They say it's something everyone of all ages can use.

“We had some gentlemen having a lively conversation about having a poor man’s curling tournament going,” said Assistant Village Manager Caroline Kennedy. “And so just a really diverse interest in being able to have this rink.”

The rink was just filled with water on Tuesday. It will open when it freezes.

They are also installing lights so the rink can be used until 10 p.m. each night.
