Optimist Club brightens kids' Christmas with shopping event

The Optimist Club gave each child $100 to shop for their family.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Dozens of kids woke up bright and early on Saturday to participate in the Traverse City Optimist Club's Christmas shopping event.

Kids from groups such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Salvation Army Pathway of Hope Program and Child and Family Services participated.

Target opened early for the event and volunteers escorted kids around the store.

The kids were each given $100 to pick out Christmas presents for their family.

"It's tough, again some of these families in today's times have gotten a little better with our economy but still Christmas can be tough for those families," Gary Chouinard from the Optimist Club said. "Maybe single parents or whatever they are, different walks of life. We are just happy that we are able to provide for them these gifts that they can have on Christmas morning."

Another group of kids went shopping Sunday morning as well.

This was the 25th year for the event.
