EMMET COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A week celebrating everything area libraries have to offer kicks off Sunday and one Emmet County community is taking part in a novel idea to help fill the shelves of a local food pantry.

During National Library Week, the Petoskey District Library will waive fines from overdue books with a donation of non-perishable food during their 'Food for Fines' program.

The library has been taking part in the program from more than 10 years.

“It’s a nice way for people to come in and pay off their fines in an easy way. We have sometimes waived over $1,400 in fines by giving patrons an opportunity to bring in food," said Library Director Valerie Meyerson.

Food donations will be given to the Manna Food Project in northern Michigan.
