TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A retired firefighter is saving children's lives through fire training and education with the help of some special teachers.
Jeff Owens and his black Labrador Retrievers have been teaching kids fire safety for 25 years through The Kasey Program.
Owens and his dogs, including his main dog Kasey, perform more than 400 shows every year at schools across the country.
Through songs and demonstrations, the dogs show the kids how to do fire safety skills.
Some of the tips and techniques taught in the program include checking hot doors, how to stop, drop and roll, knowing every possible way out of a room and having a meeting place outside.
Owens is a retired Indianapolis firefighter.
"Fire and life safety is very near and dear to my heart," said Owens. "I have visions in my head of having to pull so many kids out of fires that didn't survive and I want to prevent that as much as I can.”
The Kasey program is in Traverse City for the next seven days to teach kids at schools and clubs about fire safety, lifesaving techniques.
The program is expected to teach 400,000 kids this year.
