'Significant' fire at Boyne Highlands Resort, injuries reported
HARBOR SPRINGS, Mi (WPBN/WGTU)-- Around a dozen hotel guests at Boyne Highlands Resort were injured in a fire that broke out at the resort.
The fire started around 1:40 a.m. Sunday morning at the Main Lodge. As of 1 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were still working to put out hot spots.
According to a press release from Boyne Highlands Resort, 12 people have been injured in the fire, with one individual being transported to a hospital outside of the area.
The resort says 64 rooms were occupied on Saturday night in the Main Lodge, with around a total of 113 registered guests.
"Our primary concern right now is for those impacted by the fire, and for their health and wellbeing," said Mike Chumbler, president/general manager of Boyne Highlands Resort said in the release. "We're extremely grateful to the fire, EMS, and law enforcement agencies who are managing the situation."
Boyne Highlands' slopes are closed. The resort says a re-opening date has not been determined.
We're told that preliminary investigation shows around 40 percent of the building sustained some degree of fire damage, and that much of the rest of the lodge was impacted by fire, smoke and water.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
