GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Traverse City teaching assistant is charged with assault after an investigation.

Traverse City Police received a Child Protected Services referral filed against the New Campus School teaching assistant on November 30, 2018.

According to the referral, the assistant was assaultive and neglectful toward a student while in the performance of her duties.

During the investigation, the Grand Traverse County Prosecuting Attorney issued a misdemeanor warrant for Darci Michele Henderson, 49 of Traverse City.

On Wednesday, Henderson turned herself into the Grand Traverse County Jail.

She was arraigned on an assault/assault and battery charge.

Henderson is currently out on a $500 personal recognizance bond.

The Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District has placed Henderson on paid administrative leave while the investigation takes place.

“Student safety and the culture of the building is concern to us. So anytime we feel that there’s an incident that’s inconsistent with our standards we are concerned," said Carol Greilick, the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education for the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District.

Henderson is due back in court on January 24.
