Tourist dies after falling off bike on Mackinac Island
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mi. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A 79-year-old Texas woman visiting Mackinac Island was killed in a bike accident Tuesday.
It happened on Main Street near the library around 5 p.m.
Mackinac Island Police say Gail Johnson was riding bikes with friends and family, headed to the Grand Hotel to have dinner.
They say she suddenly swerved, lost control of her bike and fell under a moving, horse-drawn carriage.
Emergency services took her to Mackinac Island Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
A preliminary examination suggests Johnson may have suffered a medical incident just prior to the accident.
"They've sent her for an autopsy down in Grand Rapids just to validate that," said Mackinac Island Police Chief Brett Riccinto. "We were told by her best friend, people that were with her, that she's an active bicycle rider and in very good health up until this point."
Family and friends say Johnson was a very experienced cyclist, and they don't know why else she would have lost control.
Johnson was from Llano, Texas.
