Traverse City fires holiday lighting company

The letter terminates its contract effective immediately.

Traverse City has fired the company that puts up its Christmas lights downtown.

Traverse City Light & Power Operations Manager Daren Dixon sent the letter to Shine Window Care on Monday.

The letter terminates its contract effective immediately.

The contract stated that the lights were supposed to be working no later than November 30. In the letter, Dixon said that there were multiple complaints from citizens and city employees about the lights not being up in time.

Other complaints were about safety. Dixon said light strands and extension cords were installed too low or unsecured over sidewalks and roadways, with some laying on the sidewalk for more than 24 hours. According to Dixon, TCL&P was called out to fix the situation, including picking up a bin of light strands that was left in the middle of the sidewalk on Union Street.

The letter calls for all installation work to stop, and for all TCL&P equipment to be returned by December 18 at 3 p.m.
