Traverse City Police Department honors fallen police officers
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Traverse City Police Department held a ceremony to honor and remember the men and women who have died in the line of duty.
Dozens of community members attended the service in Traverse City Tuesday, which is National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Police Chief Jeff O'Brien said this year is particularly bittersweet because it marks 20 years since the community lost Sergeant Dennis Finch.
Sergeant Finch was killed in the line of duty on May 13, 1998.
"It's been 20 years. I can't believe it's been that long. We honor Dennis every year," said O'Brien. "He's one of our fallen comrades. He's the first and only law enforcement officer in Traverse City that has given his life in the line of duty."
There have already been 53 police officer deaths in the United States this year alone.
