United Way taking donations for hurricane relief

EMMET COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- For those at home looking for a way to help those affected by Hurricane Florence, you can donate with just a few keystrokes.

As soon as news broke that Florence could cause extensive damage, United Way set up a link to donate directly to its hurricane relief fund.

You can still donate to individual United Way offices in the path of the storm, but donating to the relief fund will send your money wherever it's needed most.

The Char-Em United Way in Petoskey says financial donations are much more helpful than sending goods or supplies.

“When you donate material things, they are stored in warehouses, they’re hard to move, hard to get to the right people, they may or may not be exactly what’s needed," said Lorraine Manary, the executive director of the Char-Em United Way. "And when funds are donated, then they can be used to purchase exactly what’s needed, when it’s needed.”

You can visit the Char-Em United Way website to find the link to donate to the hurricane relief fund.
