Vessel runs aground in Mackinac Straits
MACKINAC COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Grand River Navigation vessel is stuck in the Straits of Mackinac.
According to the Coast Guard, the Defiance ran aground in Round Island Passage between Mackinac Island and Round Island Friday afternoon.
The 720-foot tug and barge was on its way from Cedarville to Indiana when the barge got stuck.
Defiance has 97,918 gallons of diesel fuel and 2,917 tons of stone on board.
The crew on board told the Coast Guard they haven't witnessed any pollution and they aren't taking on water.
The Coast Guard is also flying overhead, and hasn't seen any pollution either.
Grand River Navigation is developing a plan to get the vessel out.
The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
