Woman nearly loses thousands of dollars to scammers
LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- An elderly woman almost lost thousands of dollars to scammers but Leelanau County Sheriff's Deputies intervened.
An 85-year-old Bingham Township woman reported to deputies on May 18, that she got a call earlier in the week from her granddaughter who said she had been in an car crash in Florida and needed $500 to help with attorney fees.
The woman sent the cash through FedEx to an address in Miramar, Fla and the it was received by someone on May 17.
The victim got another call from a man who said the judge in Florida needed another $9,800 for his granddaughter's case.
The woman again sent the money through FedEx but started to think she was the victim of a scam, investigators said.
A Leelanau County detective made calls and found the package was still with the FedEx delivery person and was able to cancel the delivery.
The money was returned to the victim, according to investigators.
According to investigators, scammers often target older people and urge people with elderly family members to have a conversation these types of scams.
