Youth mentor accused of killing teenager during hunting trip sentenced
OCEANA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A youth mentor accused killing a 13-year-old boy during a hunting trip has been sentenced.
On July 16, Roger Hoeker pled "no contest" to a misdemeanor charge of careless discharge of a firearm resulting in injury or death.
According to investigators, 13-year-old Billy Gort Jr. was on a squirrel hunting trip with another teenage friend and Hoeker, in February 2017, when he was hit in the head and killed after Hoeker accidentally discharged his rifle.
A mistrial was declared in Hoeker's trial in June after new evidence was found that neither the defense or prosecution knew about.
On Monday, Hoeker was sentenced to 90 days in jail.
