Youth mentor accused of shooting, killing boy gets reduced charge
OCEANA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A youth mentor who police say shot and killed a 13-year-old boy while hunting last February is now facing a reduced charge.
62-year-old Roger Hoeker was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Billy Gort Jr of Wyoming.
The Oceana County Prosecutor's Office says the judge decided to reduce Hoeker's charges to Reckless Discharge Causing Death during the preliminary hearing on Monday.
Gort and another boy were squirrel hunting with Hoeker in Greenwood Township when Hoeker allegedly shot his gun, hitting Gort in the head.
