Police: 1 victim dead, 1 injured in shooting at UAB Highlands hospital; gunman dead

People embracing after active shooter situation at UAB Highlands hospital

One person died and another was injured in a shooting on the second floor of UAB Highlands hospital Wednesday around 7:15 p.m., Birmingham Police confirm.

Police say the gunman shot two people before turning the gun on himself. The gunman is deceased and the surviving victim is in stable condition.

UAB officials issued an 'all clear' at 7:45 p.m. shortly before police conducted a secondary search to ensure no further threat.

Law enforcement have asked the public to avoid the area, but students are no longer being asked to shelter in place.

Birmingham Police will be presiding over an investigation into this incident. UAB Highlands hospital has cancelled all scheduled surgeries for Thursday.

Earlier Wednesday morning, Birmingham students participated in a nationwide school walkout to protest gun violence and honor school shooting victims, including a Birmingham high school senior who was killed at Huffman High exactly one week ago.
