Michigan Open begins play with opening round at The Bear

Golfers tee off on the first hole of The Bear at the Grand Traverse Resort on Monday.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- The weather could not have been any better for the return of the Michigan Open men's golf tournament to the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.

The last time The Bear hosted some of the best golfers in the Michigan PGA field was back in 2008. The four round tournament will run through Thursday.

Lake Orion's Tom Gillis and Howell's James Holley lead the way after the first round carding a 3-under par 69.

Some local players are in the mix entering Tuesday including Traverse City's Randy Hutchison (72) who is tied for tenth and Traverse City's Andrew Chapman (73) tied for 13th.

Also from Traverse City, Dave Sperry (74), Alex Scott (74) and Manton's Korey Mahoney (74) are 2-over par heading into day two.
