Onekama's historic steps lead Portagers to 8-man state championship game
MANISTEE COUNTY -- The Onekama Portagers made an interesting decision two years ago to switch from traditional 11-man football to 8-man football to follow a trend they could see coming for several high school football programs in the state of Michigan.
What caught everyone off guard at the time was how much success Onekama was having, making three straight playoff appearances before making the switch in 2017.
The switch turned out to a good one as the Portagers have marched all the way to one of two state championship games in just their second season of 8-man.
Head coach John Neph and senior Ben Acton and junior Luke Mauntler shared their thoughts on the historic season and the run to the finals in our latest profile.
The Portagers will meet up with Rapid River in the Division 2 championship game set for 2pm on Saturday at the Superior Dome up in Marquette.
