Thirlby doubleheader, running back battle highlight second week of playoffs

Traverse City Central and Traverse City West will play for a D2 district on Friday while TC St. Francis and Glen Lake compete for a D6 district on Saturday.

The stakes are certainly high for the second week of the high school football playoffs and with 17 teams still in the dance it creates a lot of drama heading into this weekend.

The Division 2 district title game between TC West and TC Central is going to draw big interest at Thirlby Field on Friday night with the first district crown on the line for either school since the split back in 1997.

Thirlby Field's seats will be filled again on Saturday when Traverse City St. Francis takes on Glen Lake meet for a Division 6 district. This is a rematch of Week 2 where the Gladiators soundly defeated the Lakers on the road. Glen Lake has looked nothing but impressive since then as they look to make another deep playoff run.

Don't forget about the Division 8 district between Gaylord St. Mary and Frankfort. The Snowbirds are undefeated but the Panthers are always a tough team to face in the playoffs. The Snowbirds Cal Gilling and Panthers Griffin Kelly are two of the premiere running backs in our region and will have a big say in who takes home the district title.

Traverse City Record Eagle sports writer Brendan Quealy sits down in the Jimmy John's Sports Corner to talk about all three games and what it will take for teams to move on to the regional.
