Mara Thompson joined the 7&4 News team in May 2014. She anchors the weekend shows and is out in the field reporting during the week.

Mara grew up in Traverse City and is so happy to be able to work in a community that she cares so much about. She enjoys the wide range of stories northern Michigan has to offer, from the festivals and exciting events constantly going on, to looking into how decisions made at local city and county meetings impact residents. But her favorite part of the job is bringing viewers the latest information on the scene of breaking news.

Before starting at 7&4 News, Mara graduated with honors from Michigan State University (Go Green!) in 2014 with a degree in journalism and a concentration in electronic news.

While a student, Mara was a reporter and anchor for their EMMY award winning student newscast, Focal Point. She worked for the Big Ten Network Student U as an analyst and play-by-play announcer. She also spent time interning at 7&4 News as well as WLNS Channel 6 in Lansing.

In her spare time, chances are you can find Mara either hiking or going on a run, dining somewhere downtown, or out exploring while soaking up the beauty of northern Michigan. If you see her, tell her hello! And if you have a story idea for Mara, email her at
